The causes of panic attacks are many as with most behavioral illnesses. Certainly there is evidence that the tendency to have panic attacks can sometimes be inherited. However, there is also evidence that panic may be a learned response and the attacks can be initiated in healthy people simply given the right set of circumstances. Research into the causes of panic attacks is ongoing.
Some of these factors may play a role in triggering panic attacks:
1. Genetics (a particular set of your inherited genes may have resulted in predisposing you towards developing panic disorder and resulting is panic symptoms)
2. Brain structure (differences in the parts of the brain that handle fear and anxiety)
3. Early childhood trauma (these traumas can be the result of intentional violence such as child physical or sexual abuse, or domestic violence - or the result of natural disaster, accidents, or war)
4. Stressful life events (such as graduating from college, getting married, having a first child or moving out from home)
In some cases, unsuspecting bodily conditions may also trigger a panic attack.
For example, a panic attack may be triggered because of a first time occurrence of acid reflux or heartburn. A condition where you feel a burning sensation right near your heart. Your body may mistaken this sensation for having a heart attack which instantly puts yourself into panic mode.
